Lost Coast Sports Fishing Report: Smith River & Checto River Action Heating Up!

If you’ve been following the winter steelhead season, you know that conditions can change fast—but for those who put in the time, the rewards are worth it. Over the past week, we moved off the Eel River and focused our efforts on the Smith River near Crescent City, California, and the Checto River in Brookings, Oregon. The results? Some of the best fishing we’ve seen in a long time!

Smith River Steelhead Fishing Report

The Smith River has been producing incredibly well. Despite some extreme weather—including high winds and even snow on the beach—we powered through and found the fish. The silver lining of rough conditions? Fewer boats on the water meant more opportunities for us to land quality steelhead. With lower, clearing water levels expected in the coming week, conditions will be ideal for drift boat fishing and bank anglers alike. Now is the time to book your trip!

Checto River Fishing Update

The Checto River has been holding steady with fair to decent numbers of winter steelhead moving in. The upcoming mild weather should improve fishing conditions as river levels drop and clarity improves. If you’re looking to hook into fresh, aggressive steelhead straight from the ocean, this is a great river to explore.

Weather Outlook & Fishing Conditions

The forecast for the coming week is much milder, which means water levels will continue to drop and visibility will improve. The fish are still on the move, and we expect solid action as conditions stabilize. Whether you’re targeting steelhead on the Smith River, Checto River, or Eel River, now is an excellent time to get out on the water.
